GoPro Lens Replacement – Part II

A friend has made some adapters for extending the lens on the waterproof cases. This allows you to use the original GoPro cases with a camera that has been modified with the Sunex lens. I personally like to use the cases even if not going near water as it protects the real lens on the camera and offers lots of mounting options.

One problem with GoPro waterproof cases is that the round lens on the case causes underwater pictures to be blurry. As a fix for those with the case extender, a flat lens has been created from high quality plastic. This allows for crystal clear pictures/video in the air as well as under water. It is also scratch resistent!

If you want to make camera fully waterproof, you have two choices:

1. purchase a 2nd O-ring. The official lens kit from GoPro includes 2 lenses & 2 O-rings for $20
2. But better solution is to purchase flat lens with o-ring for $15

        That’s Ok I figured that. What if I want just the lens and not the oring? I already bought orings when I bought your adapter so I don’t need it.

    Extender that you received is only long enough to accommodate curved original lens.
    If you want to install flat lens, you need to purchase new adapter (it is not listed as separate product, since all adapters sold from now on are longer kind).
    To give you partial credit for original purchase, if you order new adapter (item 1. + shipping) we will include flat lens for free.

    I’m interested in a Sunex lens + adapter + flat lens, but I have the HD Hero 960, so it’s limited to r1, r2 and r3 modes. I record in r2 (1280×720 30fps), and I was wondering if there is any vigneting with the Sunex and the adapter.

      I have used my regular gopro + sunnex at 720p and have seen no difference. I think it will work like normal on yours.

    I would like a flat lens for the underwater application but I am unsure about changing to the sunex lens also. Maby you can answer a question for me. By getting rid of the fish eye effect, are you not thereby getting rid of your wide angle? And one more. If I keep my standard lens and view my wide angle videos on a tv with a wide angle aspect ratio (16:9) will it not cancel out that fish eye effect? I dont have the means to test this, so i need to ask.

      Yes, new lens is not as wide but image is similar to standard size cameras, and without distortion it seems like it was taken with way more expensive camera.
      For flying applications is way better. As far as stretching away barrel distortions I am not sure what you are trying to say. Barrel distortions are non-linear, and can only be eliminated by fancy video post processing, or better optics, which Sunnex lens is.

    I use the GoPro 3D setup and am wondering if everything still works well should I go ahead with modding both cameras. Will all the 3d function still work fine? Will it be better? Do you have a discount for buying 2? If all is ok I would like to drop off the camera Tuesday (9/6).

      We are planning to try 3D performance with Sunnex lenses, but did not do it yet.
      Math shows that if anything should be better, but can not guarantee. No discount, you just will save on shipping somewhat.

      If you have the Sunex lens installed, you need a product  #6.
      Contains: 1 adapter + 6 screws
                      1 flat lens + 1 O-ring seal.

      Replacement lens from GoPro doesn’t work well under water.

    Do you know if the Sunex lens can be installed in the new GoPro2 ? 
    I’m asking because the FOV 90 options of the GoPro2 is basically not useable (too much noise, pixelation). But I want 60fps (720) + a narrow view without fisheye, so the optimal solution seems to install a Sunex lens into the GoPro2.

      We do not have GoPro 2 yet, so we can not guarantee that it fits. But in most probability it should.
